England 1-0 Denmark

Georgia Stanway (45)

England maintained their 100% start at the Women's World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Denmark in Sydney.

Georgia Stanway's stunning strike on the stroke of half-time proved to be the difference between the two sides, as England held on to secure a vital three points.

The win moves England top of Group C, with two wins from two games, and leaves them on the brink of qualification for the knockout stages.

England boss Sarina Wiegman named an unchanged side from the team that beat Haiti 4-0 in their opening game, and her players rewarded her faith with a determined and disciplined performance.

Denmark, who drew their opening game with China, started brightly and had the better of the chances in the early stages.

But England grew into the game and took the lead in the 45th minute when Stanway unleashed a powerful shot from 25 yards that flew into the top corner.

Denmark pushed for an equaliser in the second half, but England defended resolutely and held on to secure a crucial victory.

The win is a major boost for England's hopes of winning the World Cup for the first time.

They will now face Australia in their final group game on Thursday, knowing that a win will guarantee them a place in the knockout stages.
